WINTER AND THE ANIMALS

I have noticed that animals are extremely resilient in all kinds of weather. Some of the winter pictures I’ve taken of birds and squirrels illustrate this so well.

I love this picture of the Canada Geese huddling together on the ice. I wonder if body heat is a factor in their huddle. It certainly would be for me!
I was amazed at the lone canada goose who was knee deep in icy water foraging around for food. I don’t know what he found, but he obviously felt there was something there for him

Suet is something you can put out on your feeder during the winter to help the birds out. It’s made of animal fat and other ingredients. It is a quick source of energy and heat for the birds, and a good substitute for insects which are obviously not plentiful in the winter. This chickadee is getting ready to chow down on the suet!

The squirrel that you see here was foraging around in the snow for food, however, he looked up for a second and I caught the look of fear that you see on his face. A few seconds later a hawk swooped down on the bird feeder. He was not successful in his hunt for food. I found it amazing that the blue jays knew beforehand that the hawk was coming. They squawked so loudly and warned the birds and squirrels around the feeder of the impending danger. They were instrumental in the hawk not getting his meal.
